Her grandmother had a saying about the evil eye: it looks hardest at what is too good to be left alone. Ilse had never believed it until she found a small iron charm, a hand with an open eye set in its palm, hung above the oven door by someone who had not signed their name. She took it down, rubbed the eye with her thumb, and hung it back in the same place. Then she kneaded the dough again, slowly, counting each fold aloud the way her grandmother had taught her.

By the time the lamps came on in the square, the loaves had risen and split along their tops. A woman from the tannery came in for her usual, looked at the bread, then at the hand above the door, and paid without a word. Ilse wrapped the warm loaves in paper and kept the tongs in her fist. Nothing bad came through the door that morning, and she did not think the iron had done it alone. She left the charm where it was.
