Small dinosaur outline on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a cartoon dinosaur, possibly a triceratops, in a single black outline with no shading. The dinosaur faces left and sits on the outer ankle, against bare skin above a striped sock. The composition is close and simple, with the tattoo centred in the frame and a plain, slightly dim background.

The landlady of Carrick Terrace would not have a dog in the house, so when the thing with three horns came up the back steps in the rain, she put a saucer of milk down and said nothing about it. It was no bigger than a loaf. It had a frill like a collar of old lace, and it turned its head to the left whenever anybody spoke, as if the sea had said something rude to it.

It took the room at the top of the house, the one with the cracked skylight, and paid in pebbles. Smooth grey ones, carried up one at a time from the shingle. Mrs Pell counted them into a jar on the mantel, forty-one by the end of September. The lodgers said it was a sort of dog and the children said it was a dragon, and the old fisherman who took his tea on the step said it had walked out of the chalk cliffs at low tide and got lost on the way back.
In October a storm came off the Channel and dragged the boats up past the harbour wall. On the third night the thing went down to the water with a pebble in its mouth, came back with nothing, and sat by the range shaking. Mrs Pell understood then that the pebbles had never been payment. They had been ballast, and every one of them had been taken from a beach that needed them back.
She carried the jar down at dawn and tipped it out. The thing watched the grey stones roll back over the sand one by one, then turned its frilled head west and walked off along the tideline without once looking back, the way visitors never do.
