Narwhal outline on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single-line outline of a narwhal, with its curled body, small eye and long tapering tusk, is tattooed on the inner wrist and lower forearm. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black. The narwhal sits diagonally across the skin with the tusk pointing towards the hand, and the background is out of focus.

The tide has already gone out when Mrs Pennock finds you on the back step of the boarding house, a pencil behind your ear and the morning bread still warm in its paper. She wants the rent, or possibly the kettle seen to, and she has brought her opinion about both. You tell her it will be done after lunch, a lie you both recognise from the way she sniffs at the gutter.

Mr Abernethy had the room at the top of the stairs from March until last Tuesday. He arrived with a trunk of Arctic almanacs and a habit of sketching on the back of the menu cards. He told you narwhals were the unicorns of the sea, that the tusk was a tooth grown straight through the lip of a male, and that nobody had ever proved what it was for. 'Which is the only honest thing anyone has said in this house since the war,' he said, and winked, and then left without paying.

In his room you found a single sheet pinned to the wallpaper. One unbroken line made the whale, curling up like a question mark, and the tusk ran out to the very edge of the paper, pointing back towards the door. Beneath it, in his cramped hand, were three words: 'Follow the point.'

You walk the sheet down to the harbour wall in the wind. The tusk points past the fishmonger, past the lifeboat shed, to a rusted tin wedged in the rafters where the tar smells sweetest. Inside, folded many times, is a second drawing of the same whale, smaller, with its eye filled in. You fold them both into your coat, the ink still soft at the tail where your thumb has pressed it.
