Fine line tattoo of a vertical row of black dots on the inner wrist and forearm, with reddish linear marks across the surrounding skin.

Small dotted vertical line on inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of a vertical row of evenly spaced dots, with a short solid stroke at each end, sits on the inner wrist and runs up towards the forearm. The linework is fine and precise, and the tattoo is centred along the forearm. Reddish linear marks cross the skin around it, and the photo is taken from above against a tiled floor with part of a person's legs and sandals visible in the background.

Dear Hannah,

The roll of drawings came up from the valley on Tuesday with the carrier, and I have spent three evenings bent over them in the gatehouse, where the wind comes through the arrow slits and lifts the corners of my paper. The Earl wants the curtain wall shown as it stood in 1640, before the siege, and the masons say the only honest way to draw what is missing is in dots. Solid stone where we can still touch it, and a row of small black points where we are only guessing.

Along the north side the dots run for nearly forty yards. Each one marks a stone we have counted from the rubble below the postern, and I keep finding them where I least expect: one under the nettles by the well, two in the wall of the chapel that someone later used as a pigsty. Old Tobias, who has laid stone here since before the roof fell in, says a dotted line is the only kind of wall that stays standing. I told him that was poetry and he said it was arithmetic.

Tomorrow I walk the line from the keep to the sea gate with a chain and a boy to call the numbers. If the postern stone is where the 1640 plan says it is, the dots will end at the barbican, and the drawing will be finished. I have arranged for the ink to be sent up with the next cart so that the last dot can be made in proper black. I think I shall be sorry to finish. There is something in leaving a gap open, knowing exactly how wide it is.

Yours, in haste, Edmund
