Small Eiffel Tower tattoo on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A small black outline tattoo of the Eiffel Tower sits on the outer thigh of a person wearing black and white patterned shorts. The linework is fine and even, with light grey shading in the lower legs of the tower, and the design is shown against a dark floral background. The tattoo is centred in the lower part of the frame and appears to be healed.

Dearest Ilse, the Guild finally let me climb the Lantern Spire this morning, though only because the Regent wants cloud counts before the spring fair and my hands are the steadiest in the scriptorium. You would laugh at me. Four hundred and twelve iron steps, each rivet set by a different smith, and every landing smells of machine oil and the pear cider the tavern sends up on a rope.

From the top gallery I could see all of Vell laid out like a sheet of grey slate. The lower legs of the spire are blackened with foundry soot, so the ironwork there looks heavier than it is, while the upper frame is so thin that the wind passes straight through and makes it hum. Master Corvin says the designers meant it that way, so the kingdom would always see the sky before the city. I think he is romanticising it, but I wrote the figures down anyway, every one of them, in the margin of my ledger.

The count came to thirty-seven clouds, which the Regent will find disappointing. When I came down, the lamplighter's boy was waiting at the base with a stub of pencil and asked if I would draw the spire for his mother, who has never once left the lower wards. I drew it as well as I could, outline only, because I had no shading ink with me. I have enclosed it. Tell me honestly whether the top looks like a needle or a crown. I have been arguing with myself about it all afternoon.
