Small martini glass with olive
Fine line · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a martini glass with a triangular bowl, a thin stem and a foot, with an olive on a pick and two small open circles beside the rim. The linework is fine and even, with light grey shading inside the bowl and the foot. The ink is black and grey against plain, lightly lit skin, and the design sits alone in the centre of the frame.

The olive has already slid off its cocktail stick by the time you reach the lock, so you fish it out with two fingers and drop it back in the glass before Mrs Tully can see. The barge rocks as the gates groan open. Her boat, the Hesper Jane, sits low under a tarpaulin of coal dust and pear wood, and in forty years she has never once let anyone else take the tiller through Hythe Cut.

Pour, she tells you, and you do, from the chilled shaker kept wedged in the galley cupboard between the tins of condensed milk. Vermouth first, a splash only, then the gin she bought in Ware on a Thursday because the man there called her madam. The bubbles come from the soda siphon she refuses to replace. They rise through the glass the way lock water rises, slow and then all at once, and you watch them while she counts the rungs of the ladder up to the towpath.
Near Waltham she stops talking. The river goes flat and silver under the poplars, and she lifts the glass toward the bank, where a heron stands on one leg like a question nobody needs to answer. "Your father poured these," she says, "and never once spilled."
You do not spill. You hand her the olive on its pick, and she eats it slowly, looking at the water, while the boat drifts on past the reeds with the tiller lashed and nobody steering at all.
