You stood on the scaffold above the Harrowmere gate with the pot balanced on your knee, cursing the wind that kept lifting the brush, while the old herald below called up that the Duke of Vennet was already at the river.

The beast was meant as a gift for the sultan of Oreth, a thing of such fineness that no one could mistake it for a lie. Your master had drawn it in charcoal on a board: a single unbroken line from ear to tail, one hind foot lifted as if it had only just remembered the way home. He had taught you that a line should never stop to think. So you kept your hand loose, breathed out, and let the trunk curl down toward a river that was not there yet.
When you climbed down at dusk the gate was bright with it, a silhouette in thin pale ink that caught the lamplight and held it. Nobody in Harrowmere had ever seen an elephant. Nobody in the duke's party would ever learn that the animal was drawn from memory, from a story your grandmother told about a grey beast that carried its own weather in its trunk.
The duke rode under it without looking up. Only the herald stopped, pressed his thumb to the wet line beside the ear, and laughed, because it was dry, and because there was nothing in the kingdom that could make it smudge.
