Ruth had paid four shillings for the pineapple at the Funchal quay, and by the time the steamer cleared the harbour wall she had decided it was the only honest thing she owned. She carried it up to the rail in both arms like a sleeping child, the spiked crown nodding against her collar, while the gulls hung over the wake and screamed about the price of bread.

A grey feather came loose from one of them somewhere past the breakwater and drifted down onto the deck boards at her feet. Nobody else noticed. Ruth picked it up, turned it against the light, and found the barbs still whole, the colour of wet slate fading to silver at the tips. She had no pocket big enough for a feather, so she tucked it into the band of her skirt, against her skin, where it tickled whenever she breathed too deeply.

Three days out, the pineapple began to go soft at the base, and the steward, a sour man called Pell, offered to buy it for a shilling. Ruth refused. She cut it open on the galley table with a borrowed knife, and the smell filled the whole corridor, sweet and sharp as a bell. Pell stood in the doorway and said nothing for a long time.

When they docked at Southampton she gave him the cut half and kept the crown, planting it in a tin of wet earth on her cabin sill. Whether it grew, the purser never learned. The feather she kept, and she told nobody where she had got it, which is the only way to keep a thing like that from being taken.
