Small figure with red ball on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A small tattoo shows a stylised figure in a black swimsuit with one arm raised, holding a solid red circle above the head. The figure is drawn in clean black outline with simple flat black fill for the swimsuit, and the red ball is the only colour. The composition is minimal, with the design set diagonally along the inner forearm against a plain, softly lit background.

Winter quarters at Halloran's sat in a frost-bitten field outside Stoke, the big top folded on the grass like a sleeping beast nobody could afford to wake. Dolores Vane had been up since five, rehearsing in the empty practice tent with a red rubber ball and a patch of sawdust that smelled of damp canvas and diesel. Her nephew Tom came across the mud with a clipboard and the look of a man who had already done the sums.

"The lions went to Wales on Thursday," he said. "The elephant's been sold for scrap. Nobody's paying to watch you hold a ball, Auntie."

"Nobody's paying to watch anything now." She tossed the ball, caught it on the back of her wrist, and let it roll up to her palm. The black costume she had stitched in 1974, taken in twice since, still held its line across her shoulders. "Give me the afternoon. If the lights are wrong, I'll sell the trunk myself."

She raised her arm and the ball lifted high above her head. She held the pose the way her father had taught her, chin level, weight in the straight leg, still as a painted poster while the wind went on blowing through the tent flaps. Tom watched from the doorway. For a moment the cold ring seemed to brighten under the lamp, the sawdust remembering its circle.

Then the ball slipped, bounced off the edge of the mat and vanished under a fold of canvas. Dolores didn't go after it. She lowered her arm slowly and said nothing. The next morning Tom found it in the sawdust, rubbed it clean on his coat and carried it to the office, where it sat on the desk all winter, the only bright thing left in the building.
