Small finger tattoo beside heart rings
Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a close-up of a bare midriff and hip in black swimwear with a heart-shaped cut-out, and a hand resting against it. A small black tattoo on the side of one finger appears to be a simple outlined geometric shape, too small to show fine detail. The hand wears a plain silver band and a gold heart-shaped ring, and the warm skin tones and soft natural light keep the focus on the jewellery and the pose.

Mags had the lower bulb half full when the boat came in with the wind behind her, and I knew before anyone spoke that the crew had gone past the marker. My father always said a sand glass tells you the truth because it cannot be argued with. You turn it, and the sand goes where it goes.

I had been making timers for the lifeboat house since I was sixteen, grinding the necks of the bulbs on the wheel at the back of the shed and sealing the brass caps with a bead of tar. Each one was sized to a run: twenty minutes to the Mermaid Rock, forty to the far skerry. Mags had asked for a small one, the kind a helmsman could keep on a lanyard, so I had cut the neck a hair too fine, so it would run slow and steady for exactly one hour.
They found the stern man on the second evening, asleep on a bed of wrack with his watch stopped at the hour. Mags came to the shed with the glass in her palm and asked me to refill it with sand from the cove where he had been found, so the next crew would know what the hour had cost. I sieved the grey grains through muslin, tapped them into the bulb, and pressed the brass cap on with my thumb until it held.
When she left, she turned it once on the bench. The sand ran down in a thin, unhurried line, the way it always did, and I watched until the last grain dropped and the glass lay still, waiting for someone brave enough to turn it back.
