Sit down, sit, the kettle's on the stove and that stove is the only thing on this boat that ever did as it was told. Now. You want the lily? Everyone wants the lily. Your grandfather wanted it too, the summer the Marne flooded and the toll-house burned with every ledger in it.

Nobody had a stamp left after that, so Odile Brasseur carved one from a pear-wood block her husband had been saving for a cradle. Three petals, two curls, the shape she could cut with one knife in one evening. She pressed it into the wet ink on every barge that paid her, and the lock-keepers up and down the canal learned to look for it and wave those boats through without asking for papers.

The turn came in March. A man from the Prefecture arrived in a grey coat, asked to see her seal, and when she showed him the pear-wood he laughed and said the king had been dead a hundred years. She told him the lily was never the king's. It was the mark of anyone the canal had trusted enough to pay in advance.

He let her keep it. The block went into the stove long before I was born, but the shape stayed in the lock-keepers' hands, and when your grandfather tried to sell this boat he found the ink still on the bill of sale, a small black lily where a signature should be. Put your thumb here. Feel that? Pressed in deep. That is a promise, and promises last longer than wood.
