The week the cage jammed at the number two shaft, Idris Vaughan sat across my table with his cap in his fists and told me what to say to his mother. He wanted a full stop after "alive". I shook my head and drew the little pause for him, the comma with its tail, and set a dot above it. "A semicolon," I said, "means the thing isn't finished yet. It means there is more coming, and you are going to tell her what it is."

So the letter said he was alive; and then it said the rescue crews were cutting through by Thursday; and then it said he had eaten bread and dripping and was sorry for the worry. Three clauses held together by that mark, like men holding a rope in the dark.

His mother's answer came back in a shaking hand, two pages long. At the bottom she had drawn a semicolon of her own, a heart sitting above it, and under that she had written, "Now you carry on."
