Yin yang and dot tattoos on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a hand with a row of small black tattoos along one finger, including two yin yang symbols, open circles and solid dots. The linework is thin and crisp, with the solid areas in flat black ink and no visible shading. The plain grey background and beige knitted sleeve keep the focus on the ink, with a brass ring on an adjacent finger.

Rain had come down on the Thursday market for nine days, and the stallholders had stopped pretending it would leave. Old Maud Penhallow kept her salt under a sheet of tarred canvas, and across the lane Tobiah Reed sold thread and buttons from a barrow with one wheel that wobbled. They had shared the same narrow strip of cobbles for thirty years without once sharing a word, only a nod when one of them moved a crate.

Each evening, before the lamps were lit, each of them made marks in a book kept under the eaves of the chandler's shop. A solid dot for a sale made in full. An open ring for a thing given away: a button for a child, a pinch of salt for a widow with no coin. The chandler said it was the only honest ledger in the town, because it counted both things and never asked which one mattered more.

On the ninth night Maud went across with a jar of salt and found Tobiah sitting on his barrow in the wet, his buttons untouched. She asked why he had not sold a thing. He said he had given every one away to the children hiding from the rain, and had no dots to show for it. She said she had given away all her salt, and they sat together under the eaves and turned the pages until the marks on both sides matched.

When the rain finally stopped, the lane was shining, and in the puddles outside the chandler's door the lamplight showed the pair of marks they had made together: a dot wound round by a ring, like two fish turning in the one pool.
