Small heart tattoos on fingers

Fine line · Hand · Colour · Photo

Two hands with fingers interlocked show small heart tattoos on two fingers, one a little larger than the other. The hearts are drawn in thin, single-tone red-brown outline with no shading. The pink and mint nail polish and the blurred paved background add colour and a casual outdoor setting.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cable ship Halcyon Reach had been paying out wire for nine days when Nell Pringle found the first heart in the signal log. It was a small pencilled loop in the margin beside the reading for the forty-third fathom, drawn by someone who had been bored and had not expected anyone to read the margins. Nell tucked the log under her arm and carried it up to the mess, where the chief engineer was eating porridge from a tin bowl.

"Who's been drawing in my log?" she asked.

He didn't look up. "Tom, probably. The cook's boy. He's sweet on the wireless girl at Penzance, sends her a message every time we pass the relay. Says the hearts are for her."

Nell thought about the boy, who was fourteen and smelled of bread, and about the girl at Penzance, whom she had never met but had shouted at across a crackling line in the rain. She sat down opposite the engineer and took a pencil from behind her ear. In the next margin, beside the reading for the fifty-first fathom, she drew a heart of her own, slightly larger, and then sat looking at it for longer than she meant to.

Three days later, off the Lizard, the Penzance relay came back with a single line of dots and dashes that was not a weather report. The operator on watch read it twice, then climbed down to find Nell. She had already guessed what it said, because the lads had been betting on it since Gibraltar.
