Two small outlined hearts on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Colour · Photo

Two small outlined hearts sit on the side of a finger, one slightly larger than the other. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink reads as a dark reddish brown. The hands are close together against a blurred background, and the composition focuses on the tattoos.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell Trewin drew the same two hearts on the back of every letter she posted to Lowestoft, and by the spring the postmaster had stopped remarking on it. The larger heart was for her brother Arthur, who had taken the night boat in March with a borrowed coat and a promise to write before the nets came up. The smaller one was for herself, a size she judged fair for the one who stayed behind and kept the kettle on.

She used the brown iron-gall ink from the tin on the dresser, the kind that darkened as it dried and never quite looked red. Her hand grew steadier with each envelope. She learned which pen nib gave a clean line and which splattered, and she practised on the margins of the parish accounts until Mr Coe asked her to stop doodling in the ledger.

Arthur's reply came in June, creased soft from a long journey in his pocket. There was no news in it, only a line about the weather off Gorleston and a sentence that ran down the edge of the page: he had drawn the hearts too, on the back of his own envelope, and he had made his the bigger one, because she had always been the sensible one and he had always needed the room. Nell read it twice at the window with the tea going cold.

That evening she sat at the table and traced the smaller heart on the paper with her thumb. Some of the ink came off on her skin, faint and brownish, and she left it there rather than wash it away at the basin, since it was the nearest thing she had to his hand on hers.
