Small interlocking loop tattoos on fingers
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand with long, pointed nails shaded black at the tips fades to clear on the nail beds. Each finger carries a small black outline tattoo of two interlocking loops, placed on the upper finger skin. The tattoos are rendered in simple, uniform linework in black ink, with the soft fabric background adding a muted tone to the composition.

The chain came up out of the moat on a Tuesday, wrapped around the drowned gatehouse like a pale vein. Mr Hollis the bailiff wanted it sold for scrap before the frost came, and he had already chalked a price on the side of the cart. I asked for one week. He gave me three days and a cup of cold tea, which was more than anyone in the valley had offered me since I came up to count what the castle had left.

The links were the size of my palm, and each one passed through the next, two loops locked so tightly that no hammer had ever parted them. I cleaned them with vinegar and a boar-bristle brush. Under the silt, someone had cut a small mark into every third link, a ring folded over a ring, the same shape the masons carved above the chapel door. My grandmother used to say the last lord of the keep had struck a bargain with the river. He would give it his iron, and it would keep his name.
On the third night the moon hung full over the broken keep, and I sat in the empty guardroom with the chain across my lap. I tried to work one link free. It would not part, but it gave, slowly, the way a sleeper turns over. Somewhere beyond the wall came the scrape of metal on stone, then a second scrape, then a third, as though the rest of the chain still lay out in the dark, waiting for its other end.
In the morning I wrote to Hollis that the iron was worth nothing and that I had weighed it myself. That was a lie. I wrapped the chain in sacking, carried it down to the river at low water, and laid it where the mud was softest. Then I walked back up the valley with nothing in my arms, and I did not once look behind me to see whether the castle had let go.
