Small kangaroo tattoo on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small solid silhouette of a leaping kangaroo sits on the inner forearm, with a tail curving down and a raised front leg. The ink is a single dark grey-brown tone with soft edges and no shading or fine internal detail. The warm, slightly soft photograph is framed closely on the arm, with a white wristband and blurred background at the bottom and sides.

The kangaroo turned up at the Ashworth Grammar reunion in a bin bag, which is how Mr Pell knew it was ours. We had painted it in 1997 on the back of the art block door, a brown leaping thing with a tail like a question mark, and nobody had seen it since the caretaker took the door off its hinges for the skip.

Marcus was the one who unscrewed it. He stood in the car park of the Crown with the door under one arm and said the thing had been in his loft for fourteen years, and he wanted it somewhere people would see it. Nobody asked why he'd kept it. We were all forty-odd by then and had stopped asking things like that.
We carried it into the function room between the buffet trestles and propped it against the piano. Someone's wife laughed. Then Priya, who had been the best at drawing and had never once admitted it, pulled a biro from her handbag, went to the corner, and added a second kangaroo, smaller, tucked into the pouch with its ears just showing. Underneath she wrote in capitals: NOT YET.
Nobody could say whose idea it had been to leap, but by eleven we were all hopping between the tables with paper plates on our heads, pretending to be the joey. I drove home with the door on the back seat, the little brown animal still bounding toward the edge of the frame. It seemed the right way to leave a school: mid-jump, with somewhere to land.
