You'll not believe what Oswald did at Hartlepool. We'd got the big wheel up by seven, the candyfloss machine wouldn't stop humming, and there was Oswald, our scruffy white westie, sitting bold as brass on the top step of the strongman's booth as if he'd paid for a ticket. Mr Fenwick swore he'd never been let in. Oswald just looked at him with those black button eyes, daring him.

The thing about Oswald is he never went far from the teal ribbon Ada tied round his neck the summer we joined the fair. Ada's gone now, back to Carlisle with her mother, and the dog stayed with us because nobody else could get him into a van. He's a fairground dog through and through. He sleeps under the dodgems and barks at the generator man.

Last Thursday the wind came off the sea and took the bunting clean off the helter-skelter. While we were chasing flags across the car park, I looked up and saw Oswald trotting straight down the middle of the road, nose high, and a lorry slowing right down to let him pass. He didn't look back once. I think he knew exactly where he was going, which was the painted sign on the side of our ticket hut, where the old fair logo has a little white dog in outline, collar and all.

Anyway, I've gone over the teal collar on that sign myself, because the old paint's faded to nothing and Oswald deserves a good one. Come up at the weekend. Bring your good coat, it's cold on the coast.
