Small key and heart tattoos on a hand

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two small black tattoos sit on the skin of a hand held against a wrist: a key with a round bow and a thin shaft, and an outlined heart to the right. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or added colour. The photograph is taken close up in natural light, with a silver charm bracelet and blue denim visible in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dora kept the key on a loop of baling twine that she wound twice around her wrist, because the cider house had been locked since her grandfather died and the door had swelled so badly in its frame that nobody had gone in for two summers. The pickers were already in the top rows of the Bramley trees, and she could hear their ladders knocking against the branches while she stood in the yard with the key going warm in her fist.

Tomas from the next farm came over with a tin of oil and a bent wire, and crouched by the lock while the wasps drifted over the windfalls at his boots. He said the key was too clean to be the original. Dora said her grandfather had filed a new one the winter the old one snapped in his pocket, and that he'd never once told anyone why. Beside the lock, cut into the plank with a penknife and gone grey with weather, was a small heart with a crooked point, and under it a line of scratches she had never bothered to read.

The lock gave on the third try. Inside, the air smelled of sugared apples and old oak, and the barrels stood in their rows like patient men. On the shelf above the press lay a biscuit tin with her grandmother's name on the lid, and inside it a single folded letter that said only, in pencil, keep the key and I will keep the heart. Dora read it twice and laughed, then didn't.

She hung the key on a nail just inside the door and left the door standing open, so the warm air could move through the room and the wasps could come and go as they liked. Tomas didn't ask her to lock it again, and she didn't ask him why he was smiling at the trees.
