Key tattoo on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A simple key outline in solid black ink, with a round bow on the left, a curled tip at the far left and a shaft with notched teeth on the right. The lines are bold and even, with no shading, and the ink sits on pale skin against a dark background with a bare foot visible at the top of the frame.

Dear Tomas, the snow came over the Schwarzgrat on Tuesday, the same afternoon the carrier's mule went lame, so forgive the state of this paper. I have the hut to myself with four guests asleep upstairs, and the big iron key to the lower store is in my apron pocket, where you always told me never to keep it.

The key has a round bow worn smooth by three generations of thumbs, and a tip curled like a question mark that snags on every lining. Father said the teeth were cut to a pattern nobody living remembers. Yesterday Herr Abel asked me to fetch rope from the store, and when I turned the key the bolt would not move. Someone had filed the wards wrong, or someone had filed them right on purpose.
I went down with the lantern and found, behind the flour sacks, a second door I had never seen, painted the same grey as the wall. Inside were boxes of old survey sheets, the ones with the pass drawn as an open hand, every finger a valley. I took the one with our hut marked in red ink, the mark Mother used to draw on the bread board. I will bring it down when the road opens and pin it in the dining room, where the guests can argue about which finger we are standing on.
I have hung the key on the nail by the door, teeth towards the room, so whoever comes in from the cold will see which way the way goes. Do not come up before the thaw. The stove is fed and the bread is rising under a cloth. Your sister, Liesl.
