Small double X symbol on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up photograph of a hand turned palm up, showing a small tattoo of two stacked X shapes on the inner wrist, just above the wrist crease. The linework is thin, crisp and solid black with no shading. The ink sits near the centre of the frame against soft, blurred green and skin-toned background tones.

Brother Osric had the keeping of the salt store because nobody else would count it. Every Thursday after Compline I climbed the wet steps to the undercroft, lit a stub of tallow, and checked the barrels against the ledger the Abbot had given me. Thirty-one casks that autumn. The ledger said thirty-two, and I could not write the difference down without a sour feeling in my stomach.

Brother Hugh, the cellarer, had a gift for making other men's shortfalls sound like their own sins. I did not trust him, so I marked each cask I had checked with my own knife, two crosses laid one over the other, cut deep into the oak. A mason at Wenlock taught me the sign when I was a boy. He said it meant a thing was counted and found true. I did not think then that a mark is read by the wrong eyes as easily as the right ones.
On the feast of St Brice the cask nearest the door was empty, its staves dry as bone, and my two crosses were still on it. Hugh stood at the foot of the steps with his lantern raised and studied them for a long while before he spoke. "Your honesty is carved very plainly, Brother," he said, and smiled.
That night I went down to the mill and found the sacks of meal stacked against the wall, each one chalked with the same two crosses. Someone had been counting too, and had learned the sign from my own cask. I stood in the cold water of the millrace and understood that the mark I had used to prove my innocence was now the mark that would hang me.
