The big wheel had stopped with your cart at the top again, and Marisol's voice drifted up from the field asking whether you intended to sleep up there. You had been counting the bulbs on the scaffold instead, which was no sensible way to spend a night outside Rochdale, but the lights were the only honest thing the fair had left. Five of them ran up the frame beside the spokes, dim and evenly spaced, like stepping stones across a brook you could never see the far side of.

The lotus was painted on the mirror tent, its petals edged in grey where the sign-writer had leaned on his brush. Old Anselm swore it had opened in every town they had ever pitched in, and that it only bloomed where the ground had been disturbed. You had laughed at him the first season. By the third, you had stopped laughing, because the mud around the tent pegs was always fresh by morning, and the flower always looked a little more open than it had the night before.
Coming down the ladder, you found Anselm on an upturned crate with a penny turning slowly between his knuckles. It was worn almost smooth, the date rubbed to a rumour. 'Take it,' he said. 'Put it where you'd want to stay put, and let the field have its say.' You walked to the edge of the lot, past the generator's hum and the smell of frying dough, and pressed the coin into the soft ground beneath the lowest bulb.
When the wagons rolled at dawn, you looked back. The wheel was dark and the mirror tent folded, but the field held a small raised shape where the penny had gone in, and a line of dots ran away from it, five of them, each one a little further across the grass.
