Small wildflower stem on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A slender stem rises vertically with several orange and red blossoms at the top and small blue-grey buds and narrow leaves along its length. The linework is thin and delicate, with soft shading inside the petals and leaves. The tattoo sits on the inner forearm against a plain, dark backdrop, with a dark knitted sleeve and an out-of-focus orange plume to the right.

Marta had walked the bank above the dry ditch for three afternoons before she found the stem growing out of a crack in the lime wall, its orange heads still open at the top like a flame someone had forgotten to put out. The blue-grey buds along it were tight and hard, not ready. She crouched with her tin of paper envelopes and her hand lens, and did not touch it.

Her uncle had told her the old orchard above Pell Farm was planted by men who wanted apples and got cider instead, and that wildflowers came up between the rows whenever the grass was left to go to seed. Nobody cut the verges any more. The Bramley trees leaned toward the road as if listening. She counted the buds on the stem, nine of them, and wrote the number on the envelope in pencil, because pencil does not run in the rain.
By the end of the week the blossoms had dropped their petals one by one onto the stone. She gathered what was left of the seed heads into an envelope, a handful of dry specks no bigger than grit, and carried them down the lane past the sleeping dog and the postbox that still bore the old crown. At dusk she scattered half along the foot of the wall where the ditch met the lane and kept the rest in the tin for next year, because a seed is only ever half a plan.
