Small outline cat on the ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small cat sits facing left in a single continuous outline, with its head raised and its tail curled around its side. The linework is thin and even, and the ink is a dark blue-black with no shading or fill. The tattoo sits near the heel on a bare foot photographed in soft natural light, with the subject placed slightly off centre.

The cat would not come down off the bow rail when the Maud Ellen tied up at Kestle Lock, so Ada Pyle left her there with a saucer of milk and went to argue with the lock-keeper about the water. Her father had bought the cat from a boatman at Stourport for the price of a pint and a promise, and it had never once let itself be carried. It sat on the rail facing upstream, the way it always did, ears up, tail wrapped round its feet as if the cold were a matter of manners.

Her father used to say the cat was watching for the next lock, that it could smell the gates before anyone else on the river. He said it was the reason they never struck the wall at Ferris Bend. Ada thought he said it to make the long nights shorter. Once, when the ice came down the cut and the hull groaned against the bank, she found the cat on the cabin roof at midnight, sitting exactly so, and the broken ice parted round the boat like a crowd making room.
The winter her father died, the Maud Ellen was sold on to a man from Gloucester who wanted the hold for timber. Ada took the cat ashore with her, but it would not stay in the rented room on Mill Row. Each dawn it walked down to the towpath and sat on the bank with its back to the town, facing the way the water came from.
In the spring Ada walked out to the lock and sat down beside it on the cold stone. Neither of them moved to go. Upstream, the gates began to groan, and the cat's ears turned toward the sound before hers did.
