Small outline cat on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small single-line outline of a seated cat sits on the outer ankle, viewed from the side with the foot resting on a wooden surface. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink appears dark blue-black. The soft, blurred background and warm neutral tones keep the focus on the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cat had sat on the same fence post outside the Sagebrush Lodge for eleven years, Hal said, and nobody on the Tonopah road could tell me whose it was. Its tail wrapped round its feet, back straight, nose lifted towards the ridge where the sun was thinking about coming up. 'It was there the night my wife took the trailer and the dog,' he said. 'Sat just like that. I went out with a saucer of milk and it looked at me like I was the one who'd wandered off.' I asked why he didn't take it in. He shrugged. 'Some things don't want rescuing. They want witnessing.' I didn't know what to say to that, so I paid for the fuel and left him the change.

Eight miles out, the rear mirror held the lodge sign, then the post, then nothing but a grey smear where the cat had been. I pulled onto the verge at the state line, found the back of a fuel receipt in the glovebox, and tried to draw it. Every time I lifted the biro the line broke, so I kept it moving: a bent ear, the curve of a back, the tail folding round like a question I wasn't ready to answer. When I finally looked up, the sun had cleared the ridge and the paper had a cat on it that never once let go.
