The frost had not lifted from the Harrow Mere field by the time Nell Cotterill walked out with the lantern and a sack of barley for the geese. Her father had said the geese would not last the week if the ice kept on, and he was not a man who said things he did not mean.

She found the gander first, standing on the far bank with his neck drawn in, and beside him a single grey goose that would not come to the grain. Nell knelt in the reeds and saw the bird had a bramble cut across one leg, neat as a stitch. Behind the goose, pressed into the mud where the water had gone back, was a small mark the shape of a heart, drawn with a stick by someone who had been in a hurry or in some kind of hope.

She followed the mark along the bank for a mile, past the mill race and the broken gate, until it ended at the old boundary stone. Under the stone, wrapped in oilcloth, lay a ring of braided grass and a letter her grandmother had written forty years before and never sent. Nell read it by lantern light with the goose watching her from the reeds. It said only that the grass ring was for whoever came looking for the heart, and that the heart would show them the way home.

She carried the goose back over her shoulder in the grey morning, the ring in her coat pocket, and her father met her at the gate with his hat in his hands and said nothing at all, which was how she knew he had been afraid.
