The winter had gone on so long that the beans would not climb their canes. Mara's father went out each morning and stood in the frost with his hands tucked under his arms, looking up at a sky the colour of dishwater. Nobody in the village could remember a March like it, and the old men had stopped saying it would pass.

Her grandmother took a stick of charcoal from the range and knelt on the flagstones by the back step. She drew a circle as wide as a dinner plate, then set short rays around it, eight of them, spaced exactly, the way a child draws a sun before she has learned about shadows. The sun only needs to see its own shape, her grandmother said, and it will remember the road down to us.

Mara drew suns after that, on the gate, on the lid of the water butt, on the underside of the hen house door where only the hens would see. She did them with a nail and then with ink from her father's pen, and each morning she counted them, and each morning the frost was still there. Mrs Carver from the end cottage laughed until she had to sit down on the wall. Then on a Tuesday the rain came and softened every line, and a blackbird stood in the middle of the flagstone circle as if it had been built for it.

The sun came out that afternoon, thin and yellow, and the first warmth it gave went to the stone by the step. Her grandmother watched the steam lift off the circle and said nothing about it. Mara took the pen out again the next morning and drew one more, just in case.
