Small heart outline on top of a foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small, thin-lined outline of a heart sits on the top of a bare foot, between the second and third toes. The foot rests in sand, and a flesh-toned plaster covers the big toe, with pink nail polish on the toenails. The ink is a single dark tone and the composition is a close crop centred on the tattoo.

Dear Nell, you will laugh, but I have been sitting on the sea wall since breakfast watching the chandler's boy draw a heart in the wet sand below the slipway. He uses the point of a whelk shell and goes slowly, the way Father used to trace the coastline on his charts. Each time the tide creeps up it takes a little more of the outline, and he simply starts again.

I went down with the heel of yesterday's loaf, meaning it for the gulls, and asked him why he didn't say what he meant to someone instead of writing it on the beach. He wouldn't look up. "It's for Maud," he said. "She sails on the Thursday packet for Bristol, and I haven't the nerve to say it to her face." He said a heart in the sand was easier to be brave about, because the sea would have it back by evening and nobody could hold him to it.
I stayed with him until the water reached the first curve of the shape. Then Maud came along the wall with her carpet bag, stopped, and looked down for a long moment. She didn't say a word. She knelt on the cold stones, reached over the edge, and pressed her own thumb into the far side of the outline, so that the heart was drawn twice, one line over the other. The tide could not take both halves at once.
Come home soon. The rolls have gone hard and I have eaten two of them myself. Your loving sister, Clara.
