Small heart outline on the top of a foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot rests in sand, with pink polish on the toenails and a plaster across the big toe. A small, thin black outline of a heart sits on the top of the foot between the toes. The linework is simple and unshaded, and the warm, soft-focus photo has the foot filling most of the frame.

Maud Pelling had walked the strand at Cley every morning for thirty-one years, and in all that time she had never once found a heart the sea had made. Stones, yes. Bottle glass worn the colour of weak tea, a brass tap from some wrecked sink, a child's wooden spoon. Never a heart.

So when the chandler's boy came running up the shingle with his trousers rolled and one fist shut tight, she stopped him with her stick. He opened his hand. Inside lay a cockle shell, and scratched into its pale lip, so fine it might have been a hair, was a small outline heart. "Dug it out of the wet sand by the groyne," he said. "Somebody's been here before me."
Maud turned it over in her palm. She knew that hand. It was her sister Edie, who drew hearts in the sand with a whelk tip every summer until the summer she married a man from Norwich and went north with him. Edie never came back for anything. Maud had kept her letters tied with string in a biscuit tin under the stairs, and the last one was postmarked the year the lighthouse light was switched to electric.
She gave the boy a penny and told him to keep his fist open next time. Then she sat on the groyne with her boots in the tide and scratched a heart of her own beside the one in the shell, the same small size, the same thin line. She left the shell where the water could take it back. By dawn the sand was smooth again, and that seemed about right.
