Small outline heart on the back of the neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small heart outline is tattooed on the back of a neck, with the head and hair cropped at the top of the frame. The heart is drawn in fine, single-weight black linework with no shading, and a couple of tiny dots sit just above and below it. The photograph is black and white, with a soft focus background and the subject placed centrally.

Dear Margery,

The rain has finally stopped, so I can hold the pen steady enough to tell you about the north tower. Mr Hollis sent me up with the survey chain and a pot of Indian ink, because the Ministry wants every stone on the curtain wall recorded before the council fences it off. Most of it is hopeless work. The mortar has gone to sugar and the faces crumble under a thumbnail.
Then, at the height of my shoulder, on a block that had held its place since the Normans, I found a heart. Someone had cut it with a point, no bigger than my thumbnail, and the line was so fine I had to lean in to see it was not a crack. Above it and below it there were two small pits, as if a mason had pressed in his awl to mark where the cord should hang.
I drew it exactly as it was, one pass of the nib, no shading, because the stone deserves no more than that. Hollis came up the stairs to see what had kept me and stood a long while without speaking. He said the masons of this county marked the stone they were proud of, and that nobody had ever asked them to.
I have pencilled the drawing into the margin of the survey sheet. Tell Father I have not been eating enough, and tell him the tower is still standing. The heart is still there, too.
Yours in haste, Ada
