Small outline star on the back of the neck

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph from behind shows a small five-pointed star tattoo centred on the back of the neck, just below the hairline. The star is drawn in a thin black outline with the interior left unfilled, so the linework is clean and minimal. The skin is pale and the plain background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

At ten to four the flour still hung in the cold light from the back door, and Dad was swearing at the proving cabinet as if it owed him money. I had the lame in my hand, a little razor on a wooden handle, and a tray of sixty rounds that needed their tops cut before the oven took them. Dad never scored anything in a shape. Straight slashes, quick and even, the way his own father had taught him in Leeds.

That morning I cut a star instead. I don't know why. Five points, drawn in one run without lifting the blade, and left open in the middle so the crumb would show through when the loaf split. Dad saw it when he came over with the peel. Who taught you that? Nobody. I just wanted to see if I could. He picked up the loaf, turned it over and tapped the base with two fingers, like a man checking a bell. Hollow sounds right. Leave it.

By seven the shop had filled with the usual crowd: the bus driver who wanted his bloomer sliced thick, the night nurse who bought one bun and ate it on the kerb. Nobody asked about the star. They pulled the open bit apart and said it tasted of the outside air. By nine the starred loaves were gone, and Dad had started cutting them on everything, grumbling that it slowed the line down.

He's retired now, and the shop is mine. Each morning, before the light comes up over the car park, I cut the first one myself and leave the middle empty, because the middle is the part that rises.
