The surveyor from the county came up the hill again on Tuesday, and I did not let him past the gatehouse. He wants the north curtain wall pinned and the ivy cut back, and I told him the ivy is holding the wall up and he may take it up with the stones. He laughed, then looked at the bud I was showing him, and stopped laughing. You will think me soft, but there is a single pink bud pushing out of a crack by the postern steps, on a black stalk no thicker than a bootlace, and I have been out with a trowel every morning this week measuring it.

Here is the strange part. Along the stalk, from the mortar line down to the flagstones, runs a row of little dots, as neat as the holes a seamstress leaves. Old Mr Pargeter at the village said they were seeds, dropped by something that walked the wall before us. I think they are the marks of a path, and that whoever planted this bud came down from the keep every few days, counting steps.

I have started counting them too. Eleven dots from the crack to the ground, and the bud has opened one more petal since Sunday. Two leaves so far, and I am waiting on a third before I tell the surveyor anything.

I'd like you to come up in June. Bring the good secateurs and a flask. We will sit on the postern step, and if the bud is open by then, we can decide together whether to let the wall fall around it.
