I followed them to the wall where the ash tree came down in the spring, and there they stopped, and that is where I found the blanket you left in the Land Rover last August. It was folded, which is more than either of us ever managed, and tucked under it was a cloth bag with a stick of chalk and a note in your handwriting that said only for the lambing. I did not know whether to laugh or sit down on the wet stones, so I did a bit of both.

I have hung the blanket over the kitchen chair where the dog used to sleep. The stove is lit and the kettle is on. If you are coming up for Sunday, bring your boots, and bring the chalk, because the gate by the lane still needs its number painted on, and I think the terrier would want to help.
