Under the trailer steps lay Pilot, the old lurcher who had jumped through hoops for eleven seasons and now only jumped at the sound of the generator. His back left pad had gone tender, and each morning I worked lanolin into it while Mo told me I was spoiling him. Every evening he padded down to the gate and left one clean print in the clay, the worn pad showing a small pale patch at its centre, shaped like a heart nobody had bothered to fill in.

The buyer from the scrap yard came on Friday with a clipboard and a cigarette he didn't light. He wanted the lot cleared by noon. Mo went quiet and let me do the talking, and I found I couldn't say much of anything, so I fetched the ink pad from the wagon where we had stamped handbills for thirty years.

When he had gone, I knelt at the gate and pressed Pilot's foot onto the pad, then onto the last page of the ledger, where the totals should have been. The heart stayed white, the way it always had. I wrote the date beneath it and left the rest of the page empty.
