Four paw prints on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Four small solid black paw prints are arranged in a loose diagonal across the inner forearm, close to the wrist. The prints are filled silhouettes with clean edges and no shading, with the toe pads and main pad clearly separated. The tattoo is shown in black ink on a light background, with the forearm filling most of the frame.

Her son Tom said it was the fox from the allotments, and her husband said it was the tabby from number nine. But the tabby had been buried under the apple tree since Lent, and the fox did not take bread. Each morning the prints came again, a little closer to the proving trays, and each morning one loaf was gone from the cooling rack. Nothing was broken. Nothing was dropped. Only the bread went, and the tracks went out again toward the river.
On the last night of the month Agnes sat up with the poker across her knees. She heard the latch lift and did not stir. A grey dog came in on the cold air, thin as a lurcher and older than it looked, and it stood in the lamplight with its head low. It was not after bread. It was waiting, the way a dog waits at a door for someone who has been gone too long. She understood then that the loaves had never been stolen, only collected.
She broke a loaf on the step, still warm, and the grey dog ate it slowly. Before the bells for Prime, the prints led away into the mist, four to a stride, and the flour on the step lay smooth again.
