Small paw print tattoo on the top of a foot

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A collage of three photographs: a hairless grey and pink cat lying on a cream cushion, an ink paw print on white paper, and a pair of bare feet with purple toenail polish. A small, simple paw print tattoo in dark ink sits on the top of one foot, and the foot is shown against a grey carpet. The tattoo is solid with no shading, and the image is composed as a tidy grid of photos.

Put the kettle on, love, and stop looking at the cat like that, she's had a longer day than you. Your great-uncle Tomas carried her across the Tavery line in a fishing creel the winter the frontier men were counting every crate that came over. She was grey as wet slate and bare as a boiled egg, and she yowled the whole way like a choirboy with a grudge.

At the customs hut, Inspector Varga wanted to know what was in the creel. Tomas said bread, and the creel said otherwise. Varga lifted the lid, took one look at the thing blinking up at him, and reached for his stamp pad to write it down on the declaration form. That was his mistake. The cat stepped straight out onto the pad and then straight across the form, one soft foot after another, right through the line marked Goods Declared.

The whole hut went quiet while they looked at it. A neat trail of little dark paw prints marched from the top of the page to the bottom, and the last one sat squarely over the inspector's signature. Varga laughed until he had to hold the desk. 'A creature that signs her own papers,' he said, wiping his eyes, 'is no smuggler. Pass her through.' Tomas never did say what the bread was. The form is in the tin under the tea towels, if you want to see it. Mind the cat, she still thinks it's hers.
