Small red carnation on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A small red carnation bloom sits on a thin green stem with a few narrow leaves, placed on the inner forearm near the wrist. The linework is delicate and the petals use soft red shading, with the stem and leaves drawn in lighter green. The arm is raised against a blurred dark background, which keeps the focus on the small design.

I have pressed it between the pages of Mam's hymn book, where she kept the things she did not want the rent man to see. It is the colour of the ribbon Bessie wore to chapel, nothing like the grey dust that settles on the windowsill before the whistle has even gone.

The lads on the afternoon shift have started a book on when the new seam will open at Hollin. Dad says it will be the spring, the way the leaves come off the sycamore behind the lamp room. The wage slip came with a note saying the company regrets the delay. I have put it in the tin under the sink with the coal receipts. The carnation stays on the page beside the psalm for the lost, which Mam always said was a cruel choice for a hymn book but a true one. I have not told anyone else where it is.

Come home on Saturday with your hands scrubbed for once, and I will show you where I have put it. Bring the green thread from the market too, so I can finish the stitching on your mother's cuff before the wedding. Your loving wife, Nell.
