Small red FUN lettering on the hip
Lettering · Other · Colour · Photo
A close photograph of a small, thin-lined red word, FUN, in capital letters on pale skin. The lines are even and solid with little visible shading, and the red ink is the only colour in the frame. The lower edge of black underwear with a bow and small beads crosses the bottom of the composition, and the skin around the lettering looks smooth and slightly reddened.

Mrs Gwen Orrell wanted one word painted on the window of her bunting shop, in red, and small enough that the gulls would not bother reading it. Our Ivor had the brushes that summer, and I was the boy who mixed the size and held the ladder, so it fell to me to tell him the word was too long for the pane.

'It's three letters,' Ivor said. 'Three's nothing.'
He chose a red lake from the tin with the cracked lid and laid the capitals out in pencil first, an F, a U, an N, each leaning slightly like a row of people who had just heard a joke. Then he pulled the first line with a rigger so thin it seemed to hum. The paint went on even and dark, and the F came out looking as though it had somewhere else to be, which was exactly how Gwen wanted it to look.
Gwen came out with a cup of tea and stood in the road, squinting. 'Less cheerful,' she said. 'People are walking past with prams.'
Ivor didn't argue. He wiped the rigger on his sleeve, dipped it again and went back over the N until it was almost invisible, a red thread pulled tight against the glass. When the sun caught it at four o'clock the word could be read clearly from the pier. A woman with a pushchair stopped, read it twice and laughed out loud. Gwen never mentioned the brightness again, and she kept the shop open until the paint wore off the glass, which took eleven winters.
