Small script ankle tattoos on two people

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two people are photographed from behind, standing on grass with bare ankles visible above white trainers. Each ankle carries a small, thin black script tattoo, with the wording on the left ankle set slightly higher than on the right. The shading is minimal and the lines are crisp against the skin, and the muted greens and browns of the outdoor background keep the focus on the tattoos.

Dear Morag,

The ferry left without you again this morning, so I am writing this on the back of the chandler's invoice while the kettle goes cold. Dad says the wind will hold until Thursday, which means the boat to Oban will rock all the way across, and you will be sick over the rail before we reach the first buoy, same as always.

I went up to the old lighthouse on Saturday to see whether the stone steps still hold. They do, mostly. Near the top someone has scratched two names into the lintel with a nail, and under them the words TO INFINITY, the letters crooked as if whoever cut them was laughing. Lower down, on the other side of the doorway, somebody had added AND BEYOND. Mr Gillies said that was Ellen and Sorley, who went off to the mainland in 1961 and never came back. He thought it was a joke. I think they meant it as a promise, one half on each side of the stair so neither could read the whole of it alone.

That is why I am asking you to come home. We have always been the two halves of the thing, you and me. I have been walking the cliff path every evening, reading the sentence out loud to nobody and getting it wrong.

Please come on Thursday. Stand where I can see you. I will bring the rope and the tin of shortbread, and we can finish what we started on those steps.

Your sister, Ishbel
