Small soot sprites on the top of a foot

Other · Mixed · Photo

The photograph shows a foot with about six small cartoon soot sprites, round black fuzzy bodies with white eyes and thin black limbs, scattered across the skin. Several sprites carry tiny flowers in pink, yellow and green, and the black areas are solid with clean outlines. The bare skin and white fabric beneath make the black ink and coloured accents stand out clearly.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ada had swept the soot from the bakehouse flue every morning for thirty winters, and she had never once seen the little black things at their work until the frost came early that year. They gathered along the bricks like wet coal dust rolling itself into balls, and when she tapped her broom they scattered into the woodpile with a sound like rain on a tin roof.

Her grandson Tomas thought she was muttering to herself. "They're only soot," he said, reaching for the loaf cooling on the rack. But on the third night she saw them carrying things: a sprig of winter jasmine, a yellow crocus pinched from someone's window box, a single green leaf folded like a boat. Each one clutched its treasure against a round body, eyes white and wide, and they filed out through the gap under the door toward the trees.

She followed them once, past the last cottage, along the stone wall where the forest began. The sprites stopped at the foot of an old oak, where the roots had split the ground into a hollow, and they laid their flowers in a ring. Then they stood in the dark, small and patient, as if waiting for a bell only they could hear.

Ada went home and set out a saucer of milk and a pink primrose from her own sill. In the morning the saucer was empty, the primrose gone, and along the windowsill ran a neat line of sooty prints, each one ending in a tiny flower pressed into the ash. She did not sweep them away.
