Small spiral line tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a hand with a small black tattoo on the side of one finger. The design combines a tight spiral with thin vertical strokes and a dot at the top, drawn in fine, slightly soft-edged linework. The ring with a rough blue-green stone sits on the neighbouring finger, and the warm sunlight gives the image a natural, low-contrast tone.

The lock gates at Hatton groaned open and Ada Pryce caught the bow line before the boy could fumble it. "Slack, Tom. Let her sit." Below the sluice the water had been turning all morning, a slow brown coil that tugged at the hull like a hand on a sleeve.

Tom had been aboard six weeks, long enough to stop being sick over the side and not long enough to trust the river. He watched the eddy spin off the lock tail and thought of the drawing his mother had pinned above the stove, a spiral that started small at the centre and wound outward until it became nothing. Ada had told him the old bargees called such a thing a hook, because it would take a rope end and drag a man under before he knew his feet had gone.

They went through on the second gate. Halfway down the lock the water fell away from them, and a thin string of bubbles rose from the depths in a straight line, then broke into one bright pop beside the gunwale. Ada laughed, short and dry. "There. That's the top of it. Everything that goes down comes up somewhere else."

Tom coiled the line the way she showed him, tight and clockwise, and tucked the end under his palm. Below the sluice the spiral was still turning, patient and wide, and for the first time it looked to him less like a trap than a road that circled back to the same brown bank.
