Small symbols on the nape and fingers
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A hand rests on the bare neck and upper back of a person with blonde hair tied up. A vertical column of tiny fine line marks sits on the nape, including small crosses and dots, and a few small single-stroke marks appear on the fingers. The ink is dark grey to black against a warm skin tone, and a thin gold chain runs across the back of the shoulder.

Mother Tidy always said the lighthouse keeper's daughter had marked herself with the weather, and nobody in Port Scathe believed her until the spring the herring stopped coming. Gulls went quiet on the breakwater. The boats sat tied up, and the men played cards in the lee of the net loft and argued about whose fault it was. Then Nell Carrow came down the hill with a pot of ink, a bone needle, and a sack of salt, and she asked old Ambrose Quill to hold still.

He didn't hold still. He swore and bled on his good coat. But when she was finished he found a column of small marks running down the back of his neck, a cross, a dot, a stroke like a bird's foot, and beside them one tiny arrow pointing north. She told him each mark was a shoal she had counted from the cliff, and that a man who carried the sea's map on his skin could always find his way back to the drift of fish.
He laughed at her, then went out at dawn anyway, following the arrow in the mirror he propped on the tiller. Three days later the nets came up heavy as church bells. The town ate well that winter. Nell never said a word about it, but every autumn after, someone new came up the hill asking for a small mark, and she always asked them the same thing first: which way do you want to go home?
