Small triangle tattoo on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A male forearm, shown from the side with the hand relaxed and open, carries a small triangle tattoo near the wrist-side of the upper forearm. The triangle is built from solid black and grey-toned fills with a faint blue-grey highlight, giving a flat, faceted look. The background is out of focus with muted beige and dark tones, which keeps attention on the tattoo and the arm.

Dear Owen, the cold has got into the theodolite again, so you'll forgive my hand on the page. We reached Hollin Fell on Tuesday with mist sitting on the tops like wet wool, and I was ready to tell the Ordnance clerk we had nothing to show for three days' climbing. Then the cloud lifted for twelve minutes and the sun came low across the valley.

The triangulation pillar was still standing, though someone had knocked its cap sideways. Beside it, on a slab of grit no bigger than a bread tin, somebody had chipped a triangle, one face shaded dark and the other left pale, as if the stone had been folded like paper. Old Mr Gill, who sheared on the far side for forty years, told me his father cut it so shepherds could find their way down in whiteout. A point to aim at, he said, when there was nothing else.
I took a bearing from it anyway. The angles closed to the second, which pleased me more than it should. When I said so, the boy with the chain laughed and asked whether a stone could be sound.
Write the entry up tidy and send it back with the chain. Don't let the clerk cut the bit about the shading. I want it in the report, because somebody will need that point one day when the mist comes down. Yours, Margit
