Geometric triangle on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A small solid triangle sits on the forearm, split into a black lower half and a muted teal upper section with a lighter grey-brown tip. The shapes have clean, hard edges and flat fills rather than shading or fine detail. The arm fills the left side of the frame against a dark, blurred background, with the tattoo as the clear focal point.

The surveyor's office on Calder Row kept its maps in flat drawers, and Imre had been told never to open the bottom one. He opened it on a wet Tuesday because the lamp had gone and the only light left was the grey wash from the window. Inside lay a single sheet of tracing paper with a triangle pricked out in fine dots, one side longer than the others, and beneath it a note in a hand he recognised as his own grandmother's: The lower half is what the ground keeps. The upper half is what you carry out.

He took it to the canal at dusk, where the water was the colour of pewter and the towpath lamps made amber holes in the mist. A woman in a green coat was feeding a heron from a paper bag. She looked at the sheet, then at his wrist, where he had pressed the corner of the paper without meaning to, and said nothing about the faint blue-grey mark it had left there. She only asked him whether the triangle pointed up or down, and when he hesitated she took it from him and turned it a quarter, so the point faced the water.
He understood then that the shape was not a sign for anything. It was a measure. Every edge matched a distance he had walked and every angle a turn he had refused to take. The heron lifted, the bag crumpled, and the woman folded the sheet along its longest side and handed it back. Imre walked home with the paper against his forearm, the dark half towards the wrist, the pale tip towards the lights of the city, and for the first time in years he knew exactly how far it was.
