Small white heart outline on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a finger showing a small heart outline that appears to be done in white or pale ink, so it reads more like a raised pale line than a dark tattoo. The linework is simple and even, and the heart sits centrally on the finger against a plain light background. The image is in natural tones with no colour ink visible.

Pauline had been laying tiles on the ninth floor of Haldane House for three weeks before anyone asked her why the east stairwell lift had been shut since the winter of 1987. She didn't know. She knew only that the damp came up through the concrete like breath, and that the grout took a day longer to set here than anywhere else she had worked.

Her brother Ray had plastered this block before his knees gave out, and he had left her his trowel with one rule: never sign your work. So Pauline signed nothing. Each evening she pressed a small heart into the wet grout at the corner of every bathroom, drawn with the rounded tip of a spacer and no bigger than a fingernail. By Friday the flats held a dozen of them, pale outlines in the cream.

On the last morning a woman from the council came up the stairs with a clipboard and stopped in the doorway of 9C. "Who did these?" Pauline waited for the complaint. The woman crouched and studied the grout for a long time. "My mum used to do this," she said. "Every landing, every new floor. She reckoned the walls needed something that bleach wouldn't shift."

Pauline packed her bucket. She left the last heart uncovered in the corner of the landing, where the light from the stairwell fell across it at noon, and she didn't tell the woman that she had learnt the shape from Ray, who had learnt it from somebody else.
