Castle silhouette in an arc on an ankle
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a solid black castle silhouette with spires sits inside a thin black crescent arc on the side of a foot and ankle. The castle is filled with dense, roughly hatched black ink, while the arc is a single clean line. The skin is pale, the background is a soft grey textile and blue denim, and the photograph is taken at a close angle.

Sit down, love, the last train's gone and that bench is the warmest thing on this platform. You've not heard of Ravensmoor Keep? Everyone along this line knows it. It sits on the hill above the junction, a black iron castle with three spires, and on a clear night the moon slides in behind it like a coin into a purse.

Back in 1887 the company surveyors wanted to cut the line straight through the keep's orchard. The steward's daughter, Isobel Vane, walked down to the works with a lantern and a ledger. She offered them a bargain: bend the track round the hill in a crescent, and she would keep a lamp burning at the top of the cutting every night, so no engine would ever run blind into the rock. They shook on it. Nobody thought to ask who would light the lamp after she was gone.
Amos Greave, the signalman, inherited the duty along with the cottage and the cough. He lit it faithfully for thirty years, until a winter night when the oil ran dry and the late goods came round the bend with its fireman dozing. Amos ran up the cutting in his stockinged feet, the spires black against a sky full of stars, and filled the lamp with his own hands, burning his fingers on the hot glass.
The lamp at the top has never once gone out since. So when you walk up that track in the morning, look for the light on the curve of the hill. If it's there, someone is still keeping watch for the trains. If it isn't, you'd best go home by road.
