Power symbol on the wrist
Geometric · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small power symbol, a broken circle with a vertical line at the top, is tattooed on the inner wrist of a hand held palm towards the camera. The outline is a single, even black line with solid, uniform ink. The red and black plaid sleeve and dark background make the black ink stand out clearly.

Mr Pryce had one rule for the lamps at Carrow Keep: nobody touches the switch in the gatehouse. He said it every September when the tourists left and the castle belonged to the jackdaws again. So I obeyed him for nineteen summers, and the floodlights came on at dusk by themselves, pale yellow over the broken curtain wall, while the sheep on Allt Fawr lifted their heads and stared at them as though they had been insulted.

The switch sat behind a loose iron plate, the sort you'd find on an old ship. Someone had scratched a circle into the metal, broken at the top, with a single stroke standing in the gap like a bar across a gate. I took it for a mason's mark. On the morning Pryce went into Bangor hospital, I pushed the stroke down, just to see.
Every light in the keep went out at once. The sheep bolted. Somewhere below the walls a car door slammed, and I heard my own name called in a voice that belonged to a boy of twelve who had once climbed the same tower with a torch. Then the dark was so complete I could hear the river under the bridge, and I understood what Pryce had been guarding: not the lamps, but the quiet they bought him.
I lifted the stroke back up at first light. The circle closed around it, and the castle began again, one lamp at a time, as if it had never been asked to rest.
