Snow globe with a lanky figure on a calf
Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A lanky, pale figure with dark, wild hair and long clawed hands stands on a round base inside a glass dome. The shading is soft and smooth, with fine dots suggesting falling snow and highlights on the glass. The dome sits upright on the calf, filling most of the frame against a dark background.

The snow globe turns up in the bottom of a tea chest the week the colliery shuts its gates, wrapped in a Sunday supplement that still smells of the lamp oil your father kept on the back step. You hold it to the front room window, where the light is grey and so is the valley, and you see a figure standing on a round tin base inside the glass. He is long and narrow, thin as a pit prop, with a head of wild dark hair and two hands ending in shears, blades open like a heron's bill.

Your mother says it was your uncle's, from the year he went down the Cwm Tawel shaft with a tin of humbugs and came back up with a cough that never left. She says nothing about the snow. You shake the globe and the flakes settle over the figure's shoulders, and he lifts his blades as if to cut the sky open. Each night the frost grows thick on the inside of the window, and each morning it has been trimmed back in neat, curling lines, as though someone patient had been working at it with fine steel.
Thomas from number nine says that's nonsense, frost is frost. Then February brings the proper snow, drifting against the coal bunkers until the whole street is locked in white. You're the one who goes out with the shovel, and you're the one who sees the footprints doubling back toward the chapel gate, long strides set too far apart. At the gate something in the hedge catches the light, a glint of steel, and then it's gone.
That night you stand the globe on the sill, facing out. By morning the glass has frosted over again, but the figure's blades are raised, the flakes resting on his hair, and the pane beside him is clear in a patch just wide enough to see the street through.
