Snow globe with city skyline and flowers
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A snow globe contains a city skyline with a tall skyscraper, a bridge and dotted detail, set within a teal and grey glass dome. Red and yellow flowers with green leaves frame the globe at the top and left, and a base banded in yellow, red and black carries the words WILD PROMISE above a row of scalloped arches. Bold black outlines, flat fills and strong colour give the piece a classic American traditional look.

The dance floor at the Palisade Ballroom had been waxed so often that Ruth could see her own reflection in it, and tonight it showed her a girl in a borrowed hat, staring at the bandleader's back. The band slid into the third number and she knew it at once: Lou Carrick's "Wild Promise", the tune she had hummed on the ferry over, the tune that sold a thousand copies in Harlem and none in Ohio.

Lou had given her the snow globe in March, bought from a souvenir stall on Fulton Street. Inside the glass dome sat the spire, the bridge and a sky of painted dots, with a banner across the base that read exactly what he'd meant. "So you don't forget the view," he'd said, shaking it until the flakes rose and settled like a slow argument. She had carried it in her coat pocket for a month, turning it over whenever the telephone didn't ring.
From the stage, Carrick spotted her, lifted his chin and mouthed something she couldn't catch over the brass. Then he stepped down, crossed the floor between the couples and held out his hand the way he did in the photographs in the lobby. She thought of the globe, how the snow never really fell, only waited inside the glass until someone picked it up.
She took his hand. "You owe me a verse," she said. "Two," he said, and the band came in under them, and for three minutes nothing outside the glass mattered.
