Sound wave tattoo on a forearm
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black tattoo of an audio waveform runs along the inner forearm, with a tall central spike and tapering points at each end. The edges are built from fine, vertical hatched lines that fade into the skin, while the centre shows a soft, lighter shaded band. The image is in black and grey, with a plain pale wall behind the arm and a brown leather watch on the wrist.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the embers. You want to know why nobody rings Harrow bell after dark? Then hush, because I'll tell it once and the wood listens.

Old Jem Partridge rang that bell every Sunday for forty years, and he rang it right, one hard pull and then let the rope run through his palms. The sound went out over the stubble fields and into Brackle Wood, and the trees took it the way a man takes a coin he's owed. Nobody thought much of it. Then the spring the frost came late, the bell cracked clean across its lip, and Jem swore he'd heard the crack travel down the valley like a dog running off with a boot.
He hung a new rope anyway. On the first Sunday after the mending, the strike rang out sharp and tall, then the note frayed and thinned, flickering off into the trees in little breaths, fading and fading until there was no bell left, only a hush that went on a long while after the village had stopped listening. Jem said he could still hear the tail of it on still evenings, pulsing between the oaks, and that the wood had kept a piece of his bell for its own.
Then came the winter the bell cracked again, and this time Jem went out into the trees with a spade and a jar of wax, and was not seen for three days. When they found him he was sitting against an oak with his eyes shut, smiling like a man with a full pocket. He said the wood had given the note back. He said it was ringing still, and so he'd kept ringing too. Some nights, if you stand at the edge of the field and go very quiet, you can hear it, a long soft falling tail.
